In August 2016, Douglas Mcgowan arrived at a modest brick house near central Nashville with a contract and the faint hope of a face-to-face meeting with the home’s mysterious occupant.

Mr. Mcgowan, a scout for the archival record label the Numero Group, was looking for Jackie Shane, a venerated but misunderstood soul singer who had not been seen in public in nearly five decades. He had obtained Ms. Shane’s phone number three years earlier through a friend of hers, and the pair had developed what felt like a genuine long distance friendship — he engaged her on current affairs over lengthy, discursive phone calls and steered clear of prying personal questions; she teased him with a nickname, “Hot lips,” and told him he sounded short.

At Ms. Shane’s house in Nashville, Mr. Mcgowan had envisioned a climactic rendezvous. But it never happened.

“I’m not ready,” Mr. Mcgowan said Ms. Shane called out from the other side of a wall. After two hours of debating in the summer heat, he finally gave up, leaving the contract — an agreement for Ms. Shane to work with the Numero Group to reissue her catalog — on her front doorstep.

To Mr. Mcgowan’s relief, she signed it.

The reissue, a two-disc boxed set with extensive liner notes called “Any Other Way,” comes out Oct. 20. It is the first comprehensive collection of Ms. Shane’s music, which electrified primarily Canadian audiences throughout the 1960s. In 1963, the title track — a buttery William Bell cover — was a local hit on Toronto radio and peaked at No. 2 on the singles chart there, ahead of Skeeter Davis’s “The End of the World” and below the Chiffons’ “He’s So Fine.”

Ms. Shane walked away from her career without explanation in 1971. In the intervening decades, she has become an internet curiosity and minor cult heroine among soul music aficionados who have spun crackpot theories as to her whereabouts and well-being.

Over two telephone calls this fall, Ms. Shane, who is now 77, spoke to The New York Times for her first-ever extensive interviews with the press, and first public remarks of any kind since she disappeared 46 years ago.

She was eager to break her silence.

“I told Sam and Doug: If you want me to be phony, you’ve got the wrong person,” Ms. Shane said, referring to her publicist and Mr. Mcgowan.

She was born in Nashville in 1940, black and transgender at a time when either meant a life of constriction and compromise. Before she ever set foot on a stage, Ms. Shane’s existence was itself a tightrope walk, pitched between third rails in the Jim Crow South.

Soul 4 Real For Life Rarely Travles

Though she said she self-identified as a woman in a man’s body by the time she was 13, Ms. Shane occasionally described herself to peers as gay — several decades before the movement for transgender rights altered the discourse around gender and sexuality. Throughout her career, she was referred to publicly as a man.

“I was just being me,” she said. “I never tried to explain myself to anyone — they never explained themselves to me.”

Around 1959, she emigrated to Toronto, where she wore wigs and makeup onstage and off — typically paired with fur, silk or sequins. In front of rapt nightclub audiences, when she sang with husky, quavering verve, or turned interstitial monologues into febrile, secular sermons, she was exhibiting a kind of radical transparency.

Ms. Shane’s memorable rendition of “Any Other Way” contains a line — “Tell her that I’m happy, tell her that I’m gay” — that she imbued with subversive subtext.

“You know, you’re supposed to live,” she says in a monologue from the live version included on the boxed set, outlining her own liberation theology. “As long as you don’t force your will and your way on others, forget ‘em, baby, you don’t need ‘em.”

Before she left the grid in 1971, Ms. Shane studied under Little Richard and the Upsetters, and shared stages with Etta James, Jackie Wilson and the Impressions, among other R&B and soul icons. But she never recorded a studio album, in part because of the fledgling state of Canada’s music industry at the time and her own distrust of record labels. In the years after she stopped performing, Ms. Shane’s star, like that of so many almost-famous performers dotting the universe of postwar popular music, quietly dimmed.

Ms. Shane said she’d spent the better part of the last five decades in Los Angeles, where she first moved to be with her mother, Jessie Shane. Ms. Shane’s stepfather died in 1963, and the singer said she felt guilty pursuing a career thousands of miles away while her mother lived alone. So she left it behind, and cared for her mother until her death in 1997.

In Nashville, Ms. Shane has sought a clean break from her past. She said she moved back eight or nine years ago and now lives alone.

She is reclusive and ventures outside only rarely — once a month for supplies (including pet food: her black-and-gold cat is named Sweetie), or for the occasional walk. She declined to say how she’s supported herself, but said she’s never had a job other than music.

When Ms. Shane does leave the house, she dresses in a hat and sunglasses out of fear of being recognized. She estimates that her neighbors have spotted her only “three or four” times in the near decade since she moved in.

“I don’t mingle,” she said, because “down South, gossiping and meddling is like breathing.”

She was at times unapologetically misanthropic, tracing her distrust of others to her upbringing in Nashville. As a child, Ms. Shane turned heads by speaking and dressing in an openly feminine manner from an early age. She disarmed busybodies and browbeaters with preternatural self-confidence and an innate survival instinct that could turn ferocious.

For example, she recalled a schoolyard bully who made the mistake of striking her with a stone in the fourth grade. “He wanted to torment me and I would never allow that,” Ms. Shane said, still defiant. She used a jump rope to thrash him — and then, in a fight-or-flight fury, turned the whip on a teacher who attempted to intervene.

Not all of her antagonists were as conventional. Ms. Shane said she had twice escaped inappropriate touching from older men who were friends of her family, beginning when she was as young as five. The experiences shaded her worldview.

Recent advances in gay and transgender rights have done little to brighten it. Asked for her thoughts on the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision upholding gay marriage, Ms. Shane expressed limited enthusiasm. “We should have been able to do it from the beginning,” she said. “We’ve had to fight for everything that should have already been on the table.”

Today, her domestic life is both extraordinary and familiar. Ms. Shane has never learned to cook (“I’m a terror in the kitchen, honey — I could set water on fire”) and has food catered four to five times per week (when craving strikes, she orders from Domino’s). She says she’s accumulated an extensive library of movies and TV shows, and enjoys watching old Hollywood films with stars like Peter Lorre, Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.

Lately, though, she’s been binge-watching the NBC fantasy drama “Grimm,” about a homicide detective who discovers a hidden world of mythological creatures.

“Every culture has some kind of boogeyman,” she said.

After the release of Ms. Shane’s anthology, Mr. Mcgowan is hopeful that renewed interest will prompt her to return to public life, and — in a perfect world — the stage. Ms. Shane made no such promises in her interviews. But, she said, a recent glance at the popular music landscape has at least stirred the thought.

“I’m going to have to school these people again,” she said.

'I finally found it...A place to pour this 800 damn years' worth of murderous rage into. I'd been waitin' for so damn long, changin' bodies over and over and over again...waitin'....And for a short-tempered guy like me, that's a friggin' long time to be waitin'...an eternity...but I could do the time 'cos Arachne was there. She was the only thing that got me through...and then you two brats destroyed that! Well, thanks, 'cos I couldn't have asked for a better target for my 800 years' worth of murderous rage!!.'

Giriko (ギリコ, Giriko) was an Enchanter and Demon Weapon allied with the witch, Arachne Gorgon,[5] and served as one of Arachnophobia's top and most powerful members.[6]

After the destruction of Arachnophobia, he allies with Noah and becomes part of his group in an effort to avenge Arachne's demise.[7] He is later killed by Maka Albarn and Soul Eater.[8] Giriko serves as one of the primary antagonists of Soul Eater.

BackgroundEdit

After Arachne's 'demise', Giriko waited for her in Loew Village, where she had placed her soul into the Oldest Golem. Giriko became an Enchanter, using such skills to maintain the Oldest Golem to survive for 800 years. But for himself to live 800 years, Giriko used his skills as an Enchanter to implant his memories into his descendants, operating those children like he would any golem.[9]

PersonalityEdit

Giriko first appeared to representatives of the DWMA as a polite person, introducing himself as a Loew VillageEnchanter under the false name of Saw (or Sou), but during this encounter with Maka Albarn and Crona, he quickly showed his true colors. Giriko is far from refined and highly unco-operative with most people. He is extremely rude, arrogant, and quick to pick fights. Although he admires the powerful Dark witch Arachne (which may explain his desire to prove himself), he is not above losing patience with her before he can restrain himself, and he will even mock Arachne's other recruits into Arachnophobia such as Mosquito, his frequent opponent in arguments and fights despite being his own ally.

Because Giriko had to feign kindness for 800 years, he has built up so much bloodlust that, upon the Kishin's revival, he assumes he can catch up on all his gluttonous, lustful, and violent activities from which he has abstained from doing for so long.[10] Therefore, Giriko lives for such reckless behavior, regularly giving into his destructive urges.

Aside from his devotion for Arachne, Giriko shows little concern for other people, not even his own children. By using his enchanter powers, Giriko has managed to encode his memories and soul into his descendants, overwhelming them with his own soul. Therefore, in the 800 years he has waited for Arachne's revival, he has lived more than 30 lives.[9] He actually possessed at least 31 such bodies, upon assuming the body of one of his female descedants.

Although he is a weapon like Tsubaki or Soul, Giriko openly states his hatred for DWMA, claiming that he wants to follow his own path, rather than be used by a meister.

Giriko has also shown a particular fondness for most kinds of alcohol, rarely seen without a bottle in one of his hands. His heavy drinking has been detrimental to his effectiveness as a fighter, such as when Liz and Patty Thompson drugged his drink, preventing him from fighting against the DWMA's siege on Baba Yaga Castle, which led to the death of his beloved Arachne. Overall, Giriko gives into his vices for alcohol, flirting, killing, sex, and partying, all of which makes him a violent, unethical person, willing to kill his opponent—unless he is attracted to them, in which case he threatens to rape them before killing them.

AppearanceEdit

Giriko has a bland tan skin tone and has a varied types of piercings, along with a metal necklace. His eyes and hair color are that of a calm brown. His hair spikes, in several places, like a series of blades and possesses sharp teeth. He typically is outfitted with blue-green jeans, a white sleeveless collar shirt, black boots, and brown enchanter gloves that extends halfway between his elbows and his shoulder with the cuff folded over. As of joining Arachnophobia, the only recognizable difference in his wardrobe is the addition of a fur-trimmed jacket.[11]

During Salvage arc, Giirko was in need of a new body due to the last one falling apart and as a result, gained a new body in which was female contrary to his previous forms. As a woman, Giriko appears similar to his male form, physically and sartorially. Giriko retains sharp teeth, wears attire similar to his male form: gear-adorned jeans and belt, a sleeveless buttoned shirt, and Enchanter Gloves. Aside from some anatomical and gendered differences in physical form, Giriko's female form differs regarding hair, which now resemble chainsaws.[8]

Giirko's soul appears as a purple-hued soul a sharp chain wrapped around it and numerous other instances of mechanisms. His soul appears as large Justin Law's own.[12]

Special AbilitiesEdit

Murderous Wavelength (殺人の波長, Satsujin no Hachō): Possessing this Wavelength, this causes Giriko to possess a large amount of negative energy within himself.[2] In battle, this can be used to perform more powerful attacks onto an opponent. Due to the nature of the Wavelength, it generates a large amount of sound within the soul and can render Giriko immune to sound-based Wavelength Control such as that originating from Soul's Piano and redirect a technique against them.[8]

Full-Weapon Transformation (全身武器, Zenshin Buki): As a Demon Weapon, Giriko can transform into a weapon.[2]

Male FormEdit

Giriko's debut and appearance until his tenure within Noah's Group is that of a male adult and his own son, having programmed his memories within the child to continue his existence for around 800 years. The child in which he inhabits is a Demon Weapon capable of transformation.[13]

Deadly Demon Weapon (魔凶器, Makyōki): As a Demon Weapon, he is capable of transforming himself into a large chainsaw as well as a buzzsaw, in which is assumed to be a capability due to a weapon's ability to shift forms. As a gaint chainsaw, he (or a Meister) can use the gears to increase his power. As a buzzsaw, the 'Saws' are actually energy in place of saws. Furthermore, due to his large size and preference, he instead uses a Golem to act as his Meister in place of a living being.[2][14]

Hand-to-Hand Combat (体術(たいじゆつ), Taijutsu): Giriko is a capable hand-to-hand combatant who uses his weapon powers as melee weapons, being capable of nearly defeating Crona and Ragnarok. His skills are great enough to be on par with Justin Law, a fellow weapon that also lacked the neccessity of a Meister.[5]

  • Chain (チェイン, Chein): This allows Giriko to cause the chain associated with his chainsaw weapon form to appear upon specific parts of his body to act like a sort of chainmail armor. As the chain is constructed much like its real life counterpart, it is highly reinforced and durable; this means it is capable of completely preventing the damage inflicted by even high-level attacks such as the Holy Cross Chop.[2]
  • Reverse Gear (逆回転, Gyaku Kaiten; FUNimation 'Reverse Rotation'): This technique allows Giriko to reverse his movements from his chain, usually used in an attempt to surprise his opponents.[5]
  • Saw Leg (鋸脚, Nokoashi): Giriko's main style of fighting includes partially transforming his legs to incorporate chains around it (or even his body) and consists of using kicks and his great agility. He can also skid along the surface with his saw legs to enable speedier travel.[15]
  • First Gear (1速, 1 Soku; Speed Setting 1): His first gear is capable of sending out powerful kicks in which moved strong individuals such as Justin Law a few feet away.[16]
  • Second Gear (2速, 2 Soku; Speed Setting 2): On it's second gear, his saw leg was powerful enough to break through Crona/Ragnarok's Black Blood.[17]
  • Third Gear (3速, 3 Soku; FUNimation 'Speed Setting 3'): Not much has been seen of it's capabilities on individuals. However, only of his techniques with third gear was powerful enough to send a powerful tidal wave through an avalanche[18] and capable of easily dispatching a platoon of DWMA troops.[19]
  • Wave of Slaughter (虐殺風潮, Gyakusatsu Fūchō): Giriko rases his leg high up in the air, engaging his Third Gear, and then performing a downward, vertical kick with his slaw leg.[20]

Female FormEdit

During his inclusion of Noah's Group, his old body began to wear out. As a result, he prepared a new body by taking the fetus of his newborn daughter, accelerated her age to an adult with 'BREW' given to him by Noah, and programmed his memories into her using his Enchanter Techniques. Though the prowess remains the same, Giriko's style of battle has changed as a result.[21]

Soul Wavelength (魂の波長, Tamashī no hachō): After having let out her Murderous Wavelength, Giriko's Soul Wavelength becomes exceptional. Her Wavelength is incredible enough for Maka to remark her soul makes the Meister feel like she's being ripped apart.[8]

Deadly Demon Weapon (魔凶器, Makyōki): Giriko is still capable of transforming herself into a chainsaw weapon. Although the whole weapon form isn't seen, partial transformation has shown it powerful enough to fight alongside the likes of Soul's Demon Scythe transformation after becoming a Death's Weapon, breaking through his Witch-Hunt form.[8]

Hand-to-Hand Combat (体術(たいじゆつ), Taijutsu): Retaining the ability to battle without a Meister, Giriko's new form is seen able to easily battle the likes of Maka, still possessing great direct power.[8]

  • Saw Hair (銀髪(ぎんぱつ), Kinpatsu): After gaining his female form, she can also transform his hair into small with his partial Demon Weapon transformation capabilities.[22]
  • Saw Leg (鋸脚, Nokoashi): Giriko seemingly retains Saw Leg though has not been seen using gears. Instead, he transforms his legs into a actual chain saw. When demonstrate after being under the influence of her Murderous Wavelength, she was able to overpower Maka's Witch-Hunt.[8]
  • Chain (チェイン, Chein): Retaining her chain ability, the nature of it differs; Giriko is able to summon multiple chains from the ground to cut his opponents from a distance.[8]

Enhanced Strength: Giriko possess direct power in her female form, able to utterly trounce Maka with both Saw Hair and a version of Saw Leg. She also demonstrated enough strength to lift Maka with only one arm.[8]

WeaknessesEdit

After Arachne's demise, his yearning for revenge on Maka Albarn specifically had caused his soul to began wearing from the Murderous Wavelength's influence on his soul amplified by his hatred for her. In turn, this also causes pain and cracks on his body to appear. According to Maka, no matter how many times his soul and body was renewed from his Enchanter skills, his soul was too small for his bloodlust to 'cram' into his soul. Despite Maka's advice to rest his vendetta against her, his personality and intent to kill her caused him to ignore. As a result, his soul exploded and instantly killed Giriko.[8]

EquipmentEdit

Enchanter's Gloves: As an accomplished and extremely competent Enchanter, Giriko possess the Enchanter's Gloves, allowing him to mix soil with the usage of Magic from the gloves to knead and shape soil-like material.[23]

  • Enchanter Techniques (人形技師(エンチャンター)•技術, Enchantā Gijutsu): Giriko possess formidable Enchanter Techniques, having been able to program his own memories into his children, perform upkeep with the Oldest Golem,[13] and use soil-like material such as snow to make decoys.[20]

HistoryEdit

Being a servant of Arachne and a Enchanter, Giriko bides his time to await her revival. To ensure his own survival, he used his skills as an Enchanter to implant his memories into his genes that passed on to his own children. He lived nearly thirty, mundane lives. During the wait, he would also build power enough to later stand against Death Weapon Meister Academy though the process of living those lives nearly made him lose his mind out of boredom.[1]

SynopsisEdit

Trial Enrollment arcEdit

Crona, Ragnarok, and Maka explore Loew Village to investigate the Oldest Golem rampage to no luck with the villagers, Giriko (under the alias 'Saw') offers his assistance in finding the Oldest Golem.[24] Leading them to it, Soul notes his suspicious behavior despite Maka's protest. Giriko begans spieling about the peaceful nature of Loew Village and reveals those who appear the nicest are the one who have the darkest of intentions. The Oldest Golem appears, Giriko claiming they can no longer keep it hidden.[25] Noting Maka having found a wavelength with the Golem, Giriko reveals himself having waited for the day to stand against the DWMA with a surprising revelation: he himself is a Demon Weapon without any need of a actual Meister.[26]

A battle between the group and himself ensures, with Giriko spouting out his sinister and twisted views and gradually falter his own sanitiy as he begins having the advantage. Despite Maka's initial hit on the Golem, she finds herself paralyzed from Thread. As Giriko and the Golem go in for the kill, she is saved by Crona. However, the fight is paused on account of Arachne's reemergence.[27] Giriko attempts to bring Arachne to speed but is brushed off due to her own knowledge of the situation. After Crona attempts to excute Arachne, she order Giriko to kill them. Obeying, he nearly kills the Meister. It was then they are saved by Justin Law, who almost killed Giriko with his Holy Cross Chop had his chains not surround him in time.[28]

Giirko then does battle with Justin, trading insults at him for his affiliations with Death. Fidning him a challenge, he proposes to Justin to remove his earphones so he can actually hear him. When the priest reveals he can read his lips, it further annoyed the Echanter. Arachne calls to him, only for him to shout at her. Kindly reprimanding him by stating she doesn't like 'little boys' that scream at her, he hears her out and learn the Golem is low on energy. He then takes Arachne and escapes with her, leaving the Golem to fight the DWMA group.[29]

He finds himself in the mountains as Mosquito awaits him and Arachne, directing them to his limousine. Finds himself unable to relax, he cuts off the very top of the car's hood and annoys Mosquito. Picking a fight with him, he is stopped by Arachne as she tells Mosquito to drive to her castle.[30] At the castle, he witnesses as Arachnophobia welcomes Arachne from her resurrection.[31]

Bodyguard arcEdit

At Baba Yaga Castle, Giriko interrupts Arachne as she speaks to one of her subordinates about the completion of the Morality Manipulation Machine being directed by Mosquito. Doubting his safety due to his advanced aging and wanting to do something more entertaining, he tells her that he is heading his way. However, Arachne informs him that she hired the bodyguard Mifune for his safety. Surprised, he asks Arachne how she manage to employ his services to Arachnophobia. She then tells him that it is easy to manipulate people with a weakness.[32]

Reunion Express arcEdit

During the discussion on the destruction of the Morality Manipulation Machine at the hands of Death Weapon Meister Academy agents and the usefulness of Mifune, Giriko interjects with a claim of Mosquito himself not being quite useful in amidst his failure. This prompts a comment from the bloodsucker and the enchanter challenges him. Accepting it, Giriko blocks his attempts at attacking him Police Stinger and Three-Piece Police Stinger while berating him. This prompts Mosquito to state to returning to his 800 Years Ago form. Before they can go all out, they are stopped by a minion at the announcement of a guest in Baba Yaga Castle: Medusa Gorgon.[33]

As Medusa's conversation concludes with Arachne, Giriko along with Mosquito and Mifune appear with intent to make true of the idea that Medusa wouldn't leave the same way she entered considering the fact the sisters met once more since Medusa's betrayal. However, Arachne lets her go, an act that prompted Giriko to question if she was sure about letting her younger sister go.[34]

'BREW' - The Tempest arcEdit

Giriko is later present as Mosquito gives a speech to the entire faction of Arachnophobia and is gleeful as Mosquito announces that the battle for 'BREW' means war against Death Weapon Meister Academy.[35]

Deployed on Lost Island as one of the major members in charge of his own group of Enchanters, Giriko witnesses the start of the battle between DWMA and Arachnpohobia forces from up top of a mountain. As his group passes the time by and complain about the cold weather hoping for an enemy squad to run into them, he and his group encounter Justin Law who created an avalanche from his speakers on his snowmobile and wipes out his entire group save Giriko, who saves himself by using Saw Leg: Third Gear.[36]

Engaged in another fight with Justin, he claims that the rhythm of the song from his earbuds makes his attacks simplistic and demands for him to take them off. In return, Justin points out the absurdity of his claim and then states he's trying to get him to remove the earbuds. Angered, Giriko performs Wave of Slaughter to Justin, whom survives the attack and blasts him away with his Law-Abiding Silver Gun Radiant attack. Popping out of the snow, he contemplates retreatinf and hides within the snow. Using his Enchanter abilities, he would create snow-decoys of himself and escape, leaving behind a gear.[37]

Between 'BREW' - The Tempest arc & Operation Capture Baba Yaga Castle arcEdit

After 'Eibon's inclusion into Arachnophobia, both Giriko and Mosquito would find themselves barred from entering Arachne's room for her Magic training. This act angered Giriko and even drew sympathy from the likes of Mosquito, feeling as though he is going 'wild'.[38]

Operation Capture Baba Yaga Castle arcEdit

When DWMA successfully manage to infiltrate Arachnophobia's base, by disguising themselves as members of the organization, Maka is mistakenly dragged into maid service. The room she is tasked with cleaning belongs to Giriko, who is currently drinking at the time she arrives. Once he notices that it's a girl hidden under the cloak, he demands that she take her mask off but luckily, both Liz and Patti interrupt before she is made to reveal her face. However, as Maka is about to leave she trips and her mask flies off, yet Giriko simply tells her 'in 7...no, in 10 years, feel free to come back', completely not recognizing who she actually is.

Much later, a member of Arachnophobia is seen furiously banging on the outside of Giriko's door, as he sleeps soundly inside the room. It is then revealed that during his time with Liz and Patti, they had spiked one of his many drinks with a powerful sleeping drug, resulting in his present condition.

Tying Things Up, and New BeginningsEdit

Only after the conclusion of the battle at Baba Yaga's Castle does Giriko wake from his slumber, only to find the castle both empty and destroyed, as he proceeds to stumble around. Suddenly, Justin appears again before Giriko, claiming that they had been searching for him to ask him to come along with them. After the events of the previous arc, Giriko accepts and joins Noah's newly formed group.

FormationEdit

When Justin subsequently returns to Noah's concealed location, stating that the 'Ultimate Fighter of DWMA' and the 'Crusher' prevented him from achieving his intended aim of assassinating Maka, a small argument then ensues between himself and Giriko.

I'm gonna be an AngelEdit

During Gopher's brutal interrogation and assault on Death the Kid, Giriko does and says nothing at all. However, it is only after Kid replies with a quip on how disorganized The Book of Eibon is kept, eliciting a further punch from Gopher and a subsequent reprimand by Noah, that Giriko comments on how the show makes a great side dish for his drink.

Black Feathers vs White FeathersEdit

When Gopher returns from his failed assassination attempt on Maka, his anger leads him to violently beat Kid. While this occurs, Justin is observed simply standing outside but when the assault begins to pick up rhythm, he removes his earphones and serenely listens to the disturbing beat. It is at this point that Giriko appears, stating that Justin has nice tastes in what he listens to.

SalvageEdit

Giriko enters the Book of Eibon as per Noah's suggestion to fight Maka and Soul and to finally avenge Arachne's death.

Soul 4 Real For Life Rarely Travles

He finds them in the 'Sloth' chapter and kicks Soul to the side and then throws Maka on the bed with the intention to 'make her scream right now'. But when Maka doesn't show any emotion to this, Giriko screams in her face in anger and just plans to gut Maka when Soul kicks him off of her. Due to her experience in the 'Envy' chapter, Maka barely puts up a fight at the beginning of the fight, until Soul decides to challenge Giriko one-on-one. Unfortunately, Giriko still manages to get the upper hand on Soul, since he doesn't have much experience fighting without a meister, and badly injures him by grabbing his arms and using his Saw Foot to cut away at his torso while manically laughing before he kicked the injured Death Scythe towards Maka. After Maka gets her confidence back after seeing Soul still attempting to fight Giriko, she and the Enchanter go at it again. Giriko manages to keep Maka on the defensive until Soul used his 'Adagio of the Soul' to nullify Giriko's soul wavelength to the point where he ends up in a trance-like state long enough for Maka to use Demon Hunter to kill him until a female version of him surprises Maka and attacks her from behind. He then explains that what they had killed was really his old body that he had turned into a golem because it was no good and it was worn out caused he messed around with it to much. The new body he now has was developed from an embryo to its adult stage by Brew with all of his old memories intact. To his disappointment, Giriko doesn't like the fact that he's now a 'A big-titted female', but he still continues fighting nonetheless.

Now a female, Giriko laughs at an injured Maka as she gets back up as he violently launches an assault on her, while shouting on about how to he going to take his time tormenting her and nonsense like looking at the 'huge towering saw between his legs' before he remembers that he's a girl now. Soul attempts to use 'Adagio of the Soul' once more, but Giriko's soul wavelength has become so powerful now that he's unleashing all of his stored-up anger. Soul's piano explodes and sends him flying across the Black Room. With a non-stop assault of multiple saws created from his pony-tails and a powered-up version of Saw Foot Third Gear: Tide of Atrocious Killing, Giriko severely injures Maka to the point where she can't even stand or even lift her arms as the Enchanter grabs her head as he tells Maka that he's tired of waiting and wants to kill her now. Soul partially transforms back to kick Giriko away, but Giriko shouts to him that this is a fight between girls and that he doesn't want to listen to the opinion of a prick like him. Just when Giriko decides that he going to kill Maka by strangling her and was about to, his own body begins to undergo soul rejection as Maka discovers that the cause of it is that Giriko's soul isn't able to hold 800 years of bloodlust anymore since a soul isn't able to hold that much in the first place, even if it's new. Giriko still tries to get close to Maka so he can kill her, but he is so blind with rage that he doesn't realize that Maka is trying to get his soul to explode by taunting him and telling him to go rest on the many chairs in the 'Sloth' chapter. The moment Giriko shouts at Maka the sentence 'You piss me off!!' was the final nail in the coffin as his soul explodes from the pressure, leaving the Enchanter's now-lifeless body slumped down with a disturbing smile on his face.

Arachnophobia vs DWMA Arc (Anime)Edit

TriviaEdit

  • When introduced, Giriko is under the pseudonym Saw (also spelled Sou) apt for a chainsaw weapon.[39] In the anime, however, Giriko uses his real name when he first meets Maka, Soul, and Crona, rather than an alias.
  • Part of Giriko's appearance appears to be partly based off of Apple Shinoda from Atsushi Ōkubo earlier series B. Ichi.
