Originally compiled by the Rev. Alban Butler, now edited, revised and copiously supple mented by Herbert Thurston, S.J. Vol. II. February. London: Burns, Oates and Washbourne, Ltd. 7/6.

This second volume of the revised ' Butler' makes a welcome appearance. It is good news also to hear that owing to the valuable help given to Father Thurston by Miss Norah Leeson, the succeeding volumes may be expected with little delay. The diligence of Father Thurston and Miss Leeson is certainly extraordinary. Alban Butler's Lives of the Saints

was the work of a life-time, and here we have practically a new work, covering all the old ground and adding many new lives, completed within a very short space of time. The book may be called a new work for two reasons, firstly on account of the amount of new matter, and secondly on account of the sound critical attitude taken up all through. The extent of the new matter may be judged by the fact that of the 240 odd saints given, about 130 are asterisked in the contents as either being additions or as having been almost entirely re-written. With reference to the critical attitude Father Thurston makes in the preface a remark with which we thoroughly agree. Alluding to some of the rather imagi native panegyrics preached by Butler he says, ' ... . when heroic deeds are recounted which really are based on trust worthy evidence, the reader is naturally led to ask himself whether these things also are mere padding introduced to give substance to a narrative which was too conspicuously genaine.'

Certainly one will never expect to find padding in any work with which Father Thurston is associated, and there is none in the present volume. It thus gains enormously in strength. We may feel perhaps a little regretful when we turn to the life of, for instance, St. Brigid, to find almost every tradition given with a warning as to its doubtfulness, or at most its probability, but we are rewarded when we pass on to reliable ground, and find in the lives of Blessed Theophase V6nard or St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows to quote two of the most modern additions-dazzling sanctity, supreme heroism and miracle, all established by the coldest and soberest of testimony.

This volume would be worth having alone for the sake of the excellent bibliography given at the end of each life. Its cheapness is amazing, a haindsome volume of close on four hundred large pages for the price of an ordinary novel.

This content downloaded from 195.78.109.96 on Mon, 16 Jun 2014 02:37:46 AMAll use subject to JSTOR Terms and Conditions

http://www.jstor.org/page/info/about/policies/terms.jsp

Article Contentsp. 477

Issue Table of ContentsThe Irish Monthly, Vol. 58, No. 687 (Sep., 1930), pp. 425-480Notes on Current Educational Topics [pp. 425-428]At Eventide [p. 428-428]Classical Studies in Ireland.
